Local Home Value Growth Leads the Nation

In February, Zillow Real Estate Market Reports ranked Fayetteville as the No. 1 housing market in the nation for appreciation in the fourth quarter of 2008.

According to the reports, houses across most of Cumberland County increased in value 6.9 percent compared with a year earlier, while nationally the average value of homes plummeted 11.6 percent.

Per Diem Rate Increases

Last fall Cumberland County’s per diem rate raised from the standard Continental United States (Conus) of $70 for lodging and $39 for meals to $85 for lodging and $49 for meals.

The 21% increase represented the largest increase in per diem reimbursements in the state. That percentage traveling on government business of the 160,000 overnight visitors to the community’s hotels each month will reimbursement the local hotels and restaurants over 20%, resulting in more income to this important part of local economy.

Local taxes and fees in Fayetteville totaled $1,527 per resident and ranked 27th among North Carolina’s 31 largest cities according to a new report from the Raleigh-based Center for Local Innovation.

City Receives Grant to Add Firefighters

The Fayetteville Fire Department will be able to better handle increased call volumes with the addition of 24 new firefighters as the result of a $2.1 million federal grant. More personnel equates to better response times, increased life safety of citizens and firefighters, reduction in property loss, and a reduction in overtime expense.
