Home Values Lead Nation

“As most of the country struggles with the worst housing slump in 70 years, maybe we could all learn from Fayetteville, N.C.” That was the lead paragraph in the May 3rd edition of Parade Magazine, a weekly supplement to hundreds of America’s Sunday newspapers.

Fayetteville is one of the places in the U.S. where housing is still appreciating. Values rose a nation-leading 6.9% in 2008, according to the property- estimation from Zillow.com, and are steady this year. Part of Fayetteville’s edge lies in its strong local economy, particularly the presence of nearby military bases that provide reliable jobs. The area also managed to avoid some of the loose lending practice that caused home prices to boom and bust on other parts of the country.

Fayetteville Recognized for Its American Values

Fayetteville ranks among the 25 cities in the country that best express American values, according to the May edition of Newsmax magazine. The publication ranked Fayetteville 14th in the country for being “uniquely American” because of Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base, and its strong community support of the military. Newsmax gave the city a 10 out of 10 for “hospitality,” and a 9 for “wholesomeness.”

The magazine can be found at Barnes & Noble bookstores.

PWC Offers Tool to Track Sewer Extensions

PWC has added a search feature to its website (www.faypwc.com) that enables residents in the Phase V annexation area to determine when sewer installation is scheduled for their property.

Links for the search feature http://www.faypwc.com/quick_annex_PhaseV-address_search.html are available on the PWC homepage.  Residents can also view maps of the installation projects.

Recycling Program Recognized

The City’s recycling program has been names a national finalist for a 2009 Siemens Sustainable Community Award. The collection program began in July 2008 and quickly was heralded as a huge success. Initial collection tonnages were well above the projected annual 7,500 tons.

Fayetteville State University Program Gains Recognition

In March of this past year, the Executive Board of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) voted to grant full certification to Fayetteville State University’s Bachelor of Science degree program in Criminal Justice for a period of 10 years, making FSU’s Criminal Justice program the only Criminal Justice program in North Carolina to hold ACJS Certification.  In fact, only four programs in the country have received certification.

City Budget Made Transparent

The city council committed to an historic open process to this year’s budget deliberation.

For the first time the city manager’s budget presentation was televised on May 4, 2009. A public hearing is scheduled for the budget for May 26th. It will be televised as well.

The budget can be viewed at
