Community Benefits from Stimulus Funds
Federal funds allocated through June 30th under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act total $816 per person in Cumberland County, substantially higher than the state average of $328 per every state resident.
The per-person share is $284 in Wake County and $252 in Durham County. |
Funds to Boost Police Patrols
The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded the Fayetteville Police Department more than $2.5 million in stimulus funds as part of a nationwide program to get more officers on the street.
Under the COPS Hiring Recovery Program, the $2.5 million is expected to pay the salaries and benefits of 17 new officers. |
Fayetteville State University to Unveil Electron Microprobe
In October, FSU is slated to unveil an electron microprobe, a high-tech device that allows a person to see images of matter at the electron level. The microprobe will be one of seven in the world.
The presence of the device likely will help recruit top-level faculty and students to FSU.

Housing Market Top Nation
Zillow.com. a national web site that computes real estate values, has placed our housing market at the top of the nation for the past two quarters. Comparing Fayetteville’s median home value for the second quarter of 2009 to the same quarter in the previous year, our values are up 13.4 percent.
Fayetteville is the only city in the country that got above a 5 percent gain. Nationally, home values fell 12.1 percent over the past year.

West Russell Street to be Rebuilt
The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $1.6 million contract to repair a half-mile of Russell Street. Work is scheduled to begin as early as October 12th with completion by October 1, 2010.
The contract includes plans for resurfacing and replacing concrete drainage piping. As well as curb and gutter work.

Tourism Expenditures Grow 5.9%
Domestic tourism in Cumberland County generated an economic impact of $391 million 2008. We experienced the 5th highest rate of growth in the state and currently rank as the 10th highest county in overall tourism expenditures.
In the past ten years tourism expenditures have increased by 58% in Cumberland County.

Schools Show Growth in Test Results
Cumberland County schools posted double-digit gains on several state standardized tests. The ABCs measure each school’s performance and growth. End-of-course and end-of-grade tests in elementary, middle and high school are used as a measurement.
In grades 3 to 8, overall reading jumped by 12.5 percentage points. Math scores jumped by 11.8 percent. Among North Carolina’s largest school systems, Cumberland County had the highest percentage of schools meet federal benchmarks.
