City Bond Ratings Increase

The City of Fayetteville has received increases in bond ratings from Standard & Poor’s Rating Services (AA- to AA+) and Moody’s, which will result in lower interest rates and savings in bond issues.

The improved rating is based on the City’s continually stable economic environment, anchored by expansion at Fort Bragg and its historically strong financial position.

The General Obligation Bond refunding saved $870,000 which includes $78,000 resulting from the City’s bond rating upgrades
.

Community Benefits from Stimulus Funds

Fayetteville has been awarded almost $72 million in stimulus funding. Funding was received for the first phase of the I-295 construction, new hybrid buses for transit, police and engineering and infrastructure. We also received allocation notices totaling $1.6 million from DOE for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Funding.

 Botanical Garden Breaks Ground

The Cape Fear Botanical Garden broke ground this month on a $6.5 million visitors pavilion complex. The new facilities will include a reception hall, meeting space and classrooms. Construction will start immediately and is expected to be complete in early 2011.

   


Creation of Ethics Commission Raises Bar

Fayetteville is the first city in North Carolina to create an Ethics Commission.

The City Council recently approved the creation of an Ethics Commission that will provide objective oversight over municipal elected officials and key staff members. A five-person commission will be created with representatives from the local bar association, the local chapter of the N.C. Association of CPAs, and a representative from the local colleges and universities.

The Commission will issue Advisory Opinions and deal with Inquiries from citizens concerning actions of the city’s elected body and key staff positions.

 Fayetteville Building Market Ranked High

BusinessWeek recently ranked the nation’s strongest building markets, ranking Fayetteville as the 7th highest in the nation. Building permits have increased by 12% over last year in the area.

The rest of the country is showing more modest growth averaging 2.7% during the same period.

Housing Market 3rd Most Affordable for Buyers

In a national comparison if homes prices conducted by Coldwell Banker, the Fayetteville market was the 3rd most affordable for buyers. The study compared four-bedroom, two-and-one-half homes across the United States.

Over thirty volunteer work groups have organized to address the recommendations from the BRAC RTF and to prepare for the anticipated changes in Fayetteville and Cumberland County.

HOPE VI Gets Additional Funding

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently awarded the Fayetteville Metropolitan Housing Authority a $6.5 million gap financing grant for the HOPE VI project. This grant will expedite the project schedule. Demolition of the Campbell Terrace site should begin within the next month.
