The holiday season and end of the year gives us all the opportunity to reflect on our many blessings and look ahead to a new year filled with challenges and great opportunities.

I count among my many blessings good health, a loving and supportive family, and the tremendous honor to serve as your mayor during this exciting time in our city.

Army Breaks Ground on New FORSCOM Building

The Army broke ground this week on a $288.5 million headquarters complex, one of the important first steps in making the official move of Forces Command and Army Reserve Command to Fort Bragg. FORSCOM and USARC are scheduled to move from Atlanta by September 15, 2011, under the 2005 Base Closure and Realignment law (BRAC).

BRAC and other military growth will expand Fort Bragg to 73,000 soldiers and civilian employees. A total of 19,200 jobs will be created by 2013 as a result of the additional military investment in the region.

Fayetteville Ranked One of NC's Safest Cities

A national annual report ranking cities according to their crime rates lists Fayetteville as one of the safest city in the state of North Carolina. Fayetteville ranked safer than High Point, Wilmington, Charlotte and Greensboro.

Unemployment Dipped in Fayetteville 

The unemployment rate in Fayetteville dropped slightly to 6.6% in October, bucking a national trend that saw the unemployment rate increase in 61 of North Carolina’s counties during the same month. The statewide rate is 6.7 percent.

Highway Improvements

Russell Street
West Russell Street, from Gillespie to Robeson Street, will be dramatically improved starting in the next few months. Improvements include burying the power lines, extensive sidewalk and landscape redesign and a resurfacing of the roadway.  DOT with have the entire project under contract by the end of this year with construction scheduled to begin in the spring with completion late in 2009.

Morganton Road Bridge
The Morganton Road bridge, over the All American Freeway, is scheduled to be closed on January 19th and re-opened by Thanksgiving 2009. The bridge will be widened to seven lanes to improve traffic flow in the area.

Best Places to Locate Firms

Fayetteville has been ranked among the best mid-sized cities in which to locate a business. The city was ranked 51st among mid-sized markets in a survey by Southern Business & Development magazine.

Results were based on information from the Census Bureau, the ACCRA Cost of Living Index, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the National Board of Realtors and the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.

FSU Business School Receives Accolades

Fayetteville State University’s School of Business and Economics has been named one of the top business schools in the nation, according to The Princeton Review.

The survey respondents praised FSU for solid preparation in accounting, qualitative skills and management at the school’s Master’s of Business Administration program
